World Cup 2018: Why Spain Couldn't Defeat Portugal

Spain were favorites to win despite Portugal having the world footballer, Ronaldo on their side. The former Champions were shocked by an early Ronaldo penalty that was well converted to a goal.

The Spaniards were never daunted from trailing behind. They showed class having a squad of mostly Real Madrid and Barcelona players.

The equalizer by Diego Costa was a clear warning that they can't be intimidated. Despite that, another blunder by De Gea saw the Portuguese lead 2:1. At that moment, the same blunder that Liverpool's goalkeeper made in the UCL final came into the mind of many.

Second half equalizing goal by the Spanish side gave them total control of the second half. And then, the third goal for Spain could have been the victory goal if they have played like the losing side.

They were totally over confident that they started displaying Barcelona style of play. Showy displaying of passes, impressing the fans.

And the killer error was the substitutes made by the Spanish coach who thought they have gotten their 3 points. The removal of Costa, Iniesta and Silva removed maturity from the Spanish side. The new guys who came were in for showing their talents.

And boom! A foul on Ronaldo by Pique was all that changed the result. The Manchester United goalkeeper gave more space. De Gea wasn't well positioned. Any expert in free kick will hang the ball on that angle far off.

It was a nice day for Ronaldo. He got his hat trick.
